Going Nowhere Fast

When we face a problem that feels insoluble, the dread that arises can be intense. We can quickly move to catastrophic thinking: “I will never be able to move past this point for the rest of my life.” It’s not true, of course. Like an old-fashioned serial that ends with the hero in a seemingly impossible situation, unexpected openings will appear soon enough. But anxiety (just like depression) can constrict our vision and temporarily blind us to different ways of approaching a problem. Anxiety blocks creativity and inhibits flexibility in our thinking. We become like a revving engine that we can’t get into gear or, even worse, like a car with the brake and gas pedals pushed down at the same time.

Most people, when you tell them you’re feeling this way, will tell you to slow down and relax. This exercise obviously takes a different approach. That’s because sometimes the way through a problem is actually through it. It may sound strange to say, but paralysis has its benefits. Even when it feels like you’re in the tightest of situations, there’s always a little bit of room for movement. It may be nothing more than rocking back and forth or tapping your fingers. But when you embrace your capacity for motion, when you begin to intensify that motion, you allow your mind to start seeing things in new and unexpected ways.
